It was once a colossal boulder emerging from the dark mists of time, a cursed rock torn from the earth by a tidal wave, a granite peak surrounded by quicksand, a rock lashed by waves and gusty winds and haunted by supernatural forces. Then, three times in the year 708, Saint Michael exhorted the Bishop of Avranches to build a sanctuary there in his honour.

Thus was sealed the alliance between the Prince of the Heavenly Host and man.

It was then that the Middle Ages seized hold of the legend. And so began the history of the Norman Jerusalem, where pilgrims flocked to meditate in the heart of the Mystery.
